For the past few months I’ve been learning how very simple actions each day can significantly improve my wellbeing. One thing I’ve noticed is the importance of showing up for myself, even if it’s in very small ways. When I think about showing up for myself, I think about the small actions I can take as part of my self-care which I believe is connected to self-love. When I take care of myself it is an act of love and compassion.
Practicing self love and self care may look different for each of us and that’s okay. I say practicing self love and self care because it takes effort and intention for love and care to show up and to stay. I share 3 ways you can show up for yourself in small, simple ways each day. While the goal is to practice these daily, we all know that life happens and circumstances may not always allow for extended time for self-care. If you can’t spend an hour, you can aim for 30 mins, 15 mins, 10 mins, or even 5 mins – whatever will work best for you!
Find a few minutes for quiet reflection time: take a few minutes to be in silence to ground yourself. During this time, you can practice mindfulness by paying attention to what connects with your senses (e.g., I can see the morning light come through the window, or I can hear the sound of the fan). You can set a timer so you don’t worry about getting your day started too late or missing any appointments. You can do this practice at any point in your day!
Set an affirmation or write a personal mantra: write an affirming sentence or a personal mantra that you can return to throughout the day as a way to help you be grounded. The affirmation or mantra should be any words that you believe will help you to feel peaceful. Practice compassion by releasing the temptation to compare your affirmations to anything/anyone else – remember these are your words. Place your affirmation or mantra in a place where you can easily access it.
Slowly enjoy a meal/drink and savor the taste: choose one meal or drink and practice mindfulness while you eat or drink. Notice the flavors, textures, and colors and reflect on how this meal or drink brings nourishment to your body. Taking this time for mindful eating or drinking helps your body and mind to slow down so you can be in the moment with your food. Slowing down may also help with improved digestion and relaxation.
